  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I enjoyed maths at school, and found that I was good at it without much effort. As a result I spent a lot of time helping others in my class, especially at A Level, and realised that I found it really satisfying to explain something to someone in a way that allowed them not just to get the answer, but to really understand the problem. I've been teaching and mentoring ever since, with students in the classroom or one to one, with colleagues as a school leader, and with friends and clients on adventures in kitesurfing, climbing or paragliding.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Over the years I've taught maths, science, media studies, and English language. I've enjoyed teaching each, and especially enjoyed the opportunity to apply the socratic method in English, in a way that's not so easy in Maths. Ultimately it's great to guide someone effectively through a new subject or a new experience! I particularly like teaching algebra, because it offers students an opportunity to take a set of simple rules and experiment with them until they reach (hopefully) a satisfying conclusion.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I remember some teachers I really respected, but it wasn't until I started teaching that I found teachers who really inspired me. I've been lucky enough to work with several, and to learn from each of them. Those that really inspired me are the ones that reminded me how much fun teaching should be, and gave me the confidence to relax in the classroom.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think one of the hardest things about learning something new, especially at school, is the feeling that you're a million miles away from your goal. A good tutor should be able to reassure their students that their goals are within reach, and help them to stay the course. In most cases, anyone can learn anything, with the right application of time and energy. A good tutor should understand how much time and energy is required, and help the student understand where they are in their journey. That aside, they should be good company along the way!
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

My favourite teaching moment was in my first year as a qualified teacher. I found the school environment tough, and was struggling to inject my own personality into my classroom. I had the opportunity to host the end of year assembly with my Year 7 class, and while I was intimidated I decided to take the opportunity, and organise an unusual show, but one that would be fun if I pulled it off. I asked my year 7 class to work in groups and present their answers to silly questions like "How many rolls of toilet paper would it take to go around the world once?". I was nervous about giving the students an exercise with so little structure, but they responded brilliantly to the freedom and had lots of fun. I knew I'd made the right choice when one of my students walked across the stage after his presentation with a massive picture of a dessert held above his head. One of his classmates said theatrically "Oh, what was that?" and another responded "That my friend, was a piece of cake!". The parents in the audience loved it and I learned a valuable lesson about trusting my students to make the most of opportunities when presented with them.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I'm sure lots of teachers say the same, but the hardest thing about it for me has always been the environment. Sadly, lots of schools and students feel the pressure to perform in a certain way, and as a result miss out on the opportunity to enjoy learning together. I've been very lucky to have worked in a range of educational environments, including running a unique travelling, kitesurfing secondary school, and am convinced that there is a great opportunity for all of us to get more out of school. That's why I became a tutor and educational consultant - I have the freedom to teach in the way I want to, and the opportunity to guide schools and teachers to make the most of what ought to be a really fantastic job.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I'm really passionate about people enjoying their jobs! It's been my experience that people really want to do a good job, and often the only thing required to make it happen is to remove obstacles. I think this is the reason I like teaching - often it just boils down to removing obstacles.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)

I think perhaps my greatest strength as a tutor is my openness. I'm very confident in what I do, and as a result I'm open to changing my approach where necessary, but also in sticking to my strategy when I know it's the right one in the long term. That means I can be really patient, which for students and parents who are anxious about their success, is really important. I also look forward to tutoring every time, so I'm very rarely in a bad mood, and I find that my attitude is contagious!
